German press language in non-German-speaking countries

Foreign German-language press has long been a relatively well-researched object of study. However, studies have tended to be limited to historical, media, cultural, literary and communication studies, while linguistic aspects have hardly been discussed. In view of this shortcoming, the project examines foreign German print media and explores the linguistic aspects of this form of media language with regard to its typological structures and categorical features. Furthermore, it will explore the journalistic possibilities and forms of action that are characteristic of the specific conditions of multilingualism and inter- and transculturality. In this way, the research will focus on the specificities of press language texts in this medium: one of the most important, content-centred emphases will be on phraseology.

2. Communication in the context of two languages and cultures - the example of German in Hungary

The starting point of the project is the cultural reality that members of bilingual or multilingual discourse communities - at least within their group - communicate in many respects differently, i.e. they live with their linguistic varieties differently than monolinguals. The focus is on the language use structures of bilingual and multilingual speakers in a complex space of contact, convergence and integration of several languages and cultures, with the intention to elaborate the features and structures of these speech patterns on the material of German as a minority language. By means of a heuristic exploration of linguistic-communicative variation, we want to contribute - in a generalised way - to the mapping of bilingual linguistic-communicative scenarios and practices and to the modelling of bilingual discourse and interaction.

In my research (PhD), I use dynamic usage theory to investigate the use of fixed idioms, idioms and formulaic expressions in English, German and Hungarian in written texts, with a special focus on how the three languages interact during language learning.

Kende Lőrinc Varga

My research project focuses on the German-language poetry of the Romanian Banat region between 1960 and 1980, with special emphasis on the activities of the Aktionsgruppe Banat literary grouping and its immediate surroundings. My dissertation is based primarily on literary studies methodologies, involving several interdisciplinary methods from the disciplines of cultural studies (aspects of transculturality) or sociology (Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie). My research area covers trends in 20th century German literature, hence also post-war literature, the (neo)avant-garde, experimental trends.

Dr. habil. László V. Szabó

Research interests: intercultural literary studies, comparativism, the influence of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche on German and Hungarian literature, nihilism and literature, gnosis and literature, the literature of German bourgeois realism, modern Viennese literature (Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Hermann Broch, Joseph Roth), the aesthetics and poetics of the George circle, cultural narratives in literature.

Current projects:

1. The manuscripts discovered and digitised at that time are the product of a vast oeuvre, which could take decades to process. This project has already resulted in several publications (including a monograph) and I am working on others.

2. Together with a colleague from the Institute of World Literature of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, we are working on a joint project to process the German-language notes of Sámuel Ferjencsik, a 19th-century theologian and philosopher from the Highlands, who was a multilingual theologian and philosopher.

In the Institute of German Studies and Translation Studies of the Faculty of Humanities, research is also being carried out on the topic of Lake Balaton as a cultural space, collective memory and the concept of identity in German-Hungarian literary and cultural relations.

The research project deals with the role of Lake Balaton, its identity-forming power, the image of Lake Balaton in German-Hungarian relations, and the way it has shaped the dialogue between the two cultures on the basis of selected literary texts and films. These texts and films attest to the fact that the theme is present and expressed, if not so strongly, in the German and Hungarian collective memory, with the authors, as contemporary witnesses, using their own individual memories and their own material of experience. Literature and film can be interpreted as sites of memory, as building blocks of the cultural memory of societies, and therefore the literary text can also be read as a product of the cultural context. The memories and the texts/films reflect on the encounters between East and West German separated families at Lake Balaton in the 60s and 80s.

Lake Balaton as a place of remembrance symbolises the crossing of borders, the desire for freedom, the drama of separated families, the joy of encounters, the little tricks of circumventing dictatorship, opportunity and hope. All of these experiences are framed by Lake Balaton as a natural and cultural space through which opposites are highlighted and reconciled. These are the elements of the image of Lake Balaton that captivate all who come here, along with the natural beauty and majestic tranquillity of the lake.
