Veszprém

Veszprém, seat of County Veszprém, City of the Queens. The historical past of the town dates back to the time of the conquest of the Carpathian Basin, when Veszprém became the property of the princely family. It became the City of the Queens through the wife of our first king St. Stephen, Gizella, and later became one of the most important centres of the Catholic Church. The historical core of Veszprém is the castle area, where the church buildings and museums complement each other perfectly, as do the exhibition halls and galleries of contemporary art.

Veszprém is both an old and a new town, with different atmospheres in different parts. The pedestrian street, the rejuvenated Kossuth street, is a popular destination for residents and tourists alike: shops, restaurants, cafés, offices and institutions are all located in this relatively small area. Veszprém’s tallest building, the 20-storey tower house, is surrounded by smaller and larger squares where visitors can enjoy sporting events, quizzes and fairs among sculptures, fountains and splashing fountains.

Veszprém has a lively cultural life all year round, with performances in three theatres and concerts in the Hangvilla Multifunctional Community Area in winter, and a series of festivals from spring to autumn to entertain not only the locals but also visitors. The most famous of these are the Contemporary Dance Festival, the Street Music Festival, the Veszprémfest with its musical accompaniment, the classical Auer Festival, and the Festival of Early Music.  The Kittenberger Kálmán Botanical and Wildlife Park, a zoo of European fame offering programmes sufficient for the entire day, attracts many visitors. In addition, the city's parks and surrounding green areas are popular places for excursions. The proximity of Lake Balaton and the Bakony Mountains make for a pleasant all-day stay.

In addition to excursions, both the university and the town offer plenty of opportunities for those interested in active sports. Alongside the most popular sports, such as swimming, ball games and tennis, students can also enjoy special sporting experiences such as wall climbing, martial arts or the increasingly popular Balaton Regatta, a competition between students from the university faculties.

The University of Pannonia plays an important role in the academic life of the city. Throughout most of the year, a rich academic life is reinforced through university events and conferences, as well as lectures at the headquarters of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Veszprém Castle. Our Institute meets the scientific demands of the wider profession with two conferences a year, events organised by the Doctoral School, and many other programmes, with special contributions from the professional and cultural activities of our foreign students.

As an administrative, industrial and commercial centre, the city offers excellent job opportunities for both residents and students studying at the University of Pannonia. In addition, in some of our courses, the organisations present in the city also contribute to the training as a field of work experience.
